How To Light The Pilot Light on Your Hot Water Heater
Do you need instructions on lighting your hot water heater’s pilot light? If so, you’re in the right place. We’re going to help you do that in this article. The process is both quick and easy. First, you need to accurately determine if you have an automatic hot water heater or a manual.
What Type of Hot Water Heater Do You Have?
Your hot water heater is either a manual or an automatic. If it’s an automatic, it will have a little “ignition” button on the small box that’s sticking out on the side of your water heater. Check for the button. If you don’t have it, it’s a manual.

Lighting a Manual Hot Water Heater’s Pilot Light
To begin with, you’ll want to grab a lighter that is very long and can fit in tight spaces. This might be a lighter you would use at a barbecue, for example.
Next, remove the plate on the side of your water heater that’s just below the box with all of the buttons and dials on it. It’s usually sticking out of the side of your water heater.
After removal, trace the pipe or pipes you see up to the burner location. That will be what you’ll actually light.
Turn the pilot button or dial to “Off.” Wait 5-10 minutes to let all gas in the area dissipate. In addition, turn the temperature on your hot water heater to “Low”. Then, push down the pilot button or dial as you light the burner with your lighter.
Hold the pilot button for a full 30 seconds and then release it. You just have to set your temperature back to the correct setting at this point, and your job is complete!
Lighting an Automatic Hot Water Heater’s Pilot Light
If your water heater is automatic, the steps are similar. However, don’t worry about removing any type of plate from your hot water heater.
Just hold the “pilot” button or dial down while you also hold down your “ignition” button. Your hot water heater will light up immediately. You don’t have to use your lighter at all.
